Essoyes is situated in 45 km in the south of Troyes, in 15 km of Bar sur Seine and in the border of the Burgundy, this big village at the bottom of a valley surrounded with greenery.
Tributary of the Seine, Ource cuts the village in two. La Roseraie is on the left bank of this river. A geographical situation away from the big traffic lanes which invites in the peace and in the rest.

Essoyes means of course Renoir, his sons, Jean Renoir the filmmaker, Pierre Renoir, the actor, Claude Renoir the pottery craftman, all buried in the village and his daughter Jeanne Tréhot, born before his wedding with Aline Charigot.
Renoir had bought a house to Essoyes in 1890 when he spent his summers. This house is opened to the public in June. The house of Renoir today looks like not at all the one that he knew at the appropriate time. Renovation work modernized this house which would have of to stay in its “juice”
Essoyes is also the birthplace of other famous people :
Auguste Hériot founder of “Grands Magasins du Louvre” who is described in Zola’s novel “Au bonheur des dames”
Louis Morel sculptor, the hand of Renoir.
Essoyes it is also the starting point of numerous walks with 200 km of marked out ways and the possibility to taste the champagne Charles Collin, one of our partners
